I'm Plai, 29, a history graduate who works at an old-town museum on weekdays and walks with people on days off. My favourite route runs from the flower market past Wat Pho and ends at a coffee shop behind Tha Tien, and on the way I tell you what isn't on the signs: why this temple faces the way it does, who built the shophouses. It's a walk, not a lecture, so ask anything; if I don't know, I'll say so. Museums and galleries are good too, taken slowly. Honest note: I'm a walking companion, not a licensed guide. Where a site requires an official guide, we hire one on the spot.

Plai's own rules

  1. Temples, museums and the streets between them. We start early because the afternoon is too hot to walk.
  2. Temple dress: shoulders and knees covered. I'll remind you once.
  3. Where a site requires a licensed guide, I don't guide. I can still come along as a friend while a guide does the guiding.
  4. No politics inside a temple. Outside is fine.

Plai's assistant will say up front if your plan runs into one of these.
